The Motherhood Project: Alicia

“Sometimes motherhood can get overwhelming, but if you love that little human, it is enough.”

Name: Alicia Snow | Child’s Names and Age: Taylor James – 1 Year Old

Alicia Snow

Did you enjoy your pregnancy?: I loved my pregnancy! I had morning sickness until about 18 weeks so that was rough. I actually lost 10lbs my first trimester because of it. After I got over that, everything was pretty textbook. I actually miss having a bump and I’m looking forward to my next pregnancy.

How was your delivery experience?: My delivery experience was awesome and went really well. My water broke at 5am and I had a baby in my arms by 1:15pm. Of course there were a few unbearable contractions somewhere in there, but once that epidural kicked in (bless that anesthesiologist forever and always) it was smooth sailing. People give me funny looks when I tell them I enjoyed labor. It was the most empowering thing I’ve ever done. You can read Taylor’s full birth story here (because who doesn’t love a good birth story?)

What’s your biggest struggle when it comes to being a mom?: I think it’s not losing myself in the monotony. In the beginning I sort of forgot about myself. My entire life became bottles and diapers. Eventually I realized that I needed to also do some things besides baby stuff. I started blogging more and designing prints for my Etsy shop. When I do things for myself, I can be more focused on Taylor.

What’s your biggest strength when it comes to being a mom?: My biggest strength is being laid-back. Being a mom can be stressful, but I feel like I can relax and let things go. I don’t get bent out of shape when things go wrong or not as planned (because let’s be honest, once you have kids, nothing will go “as planned”). I’m glad I can just enjoy being a mom without a lot of the stress that can come with it.

What is your parenting style?: My parenting style is to observe. I think a natural instinct as a mother is to help your child when they struggle. Sometimes it’s good to sit back and let your child figure things out before intervening. It’s such a great feeling to watch as they solve a problem or finally get something right all by themselves.

What is your favorite part of the day with your child?: My favorite part of the day is right after Taylor wakes up in the morning. This is when he’s happiest and we tend to play on the floor until nap time.

Who is an inspiration to you when it comes to motherhood?: My inspiration is my sister-in-law. She has 2 year old twins and an 8 month old baby. She never loses her patience and she always gives them her full attention. I’m definitely taking notes for when my family expands.

Advice for fellow mothers who need a little boost?: Whenever I start doubting my abilities I simply ask myself, “Do you love your baby?” If the answer is yes, then you’re doing the best you can! Sometimes motherhood can get overwhelming, but if you love that little human, it is enough.

Where is your favorite place to shop for yourself? Favorite place to shop for your child?: My favorites are the same for both of us. My favorite place to shop for myself and for Taylor is Target and Old Navy. I’m a big fan of the clearance section.

What’s one product for yourself you can’t live without? Favorite product for your child/children?: For me, I couldn’t live without some dry shampoo because it’s almost a guarantee that I won’t get a shower in. My favorite baby product as of late is Ryland’s teething tablets. Teething is a beast.

How has being a mom changed your life?: How has it not changed my life? I think becoming a mother changes every aspect of your life in one way or another. And I’m so glad that it has. Being a mom encourages me to be a better person in all areas.
