How to Cope with Disneyland Being Closed #letsLEARNfriday

Ok, so I could be the president of this topic. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I frequently whine about my desire to get back to The Happiest Place on Earth, and how life honestly (no sarcasm here) is harder without Disneyland being a constant in it. When I read the suggestion for #letsLEARNfriday that said, “How to cope with Disneyland Being Closed,” I not only felt a boatload of sympathy for this person, but also knew I’d have to jump on this quickly. I’m not 100% sure that it was a serious suggestion or not, but if its an excuse for me to talk about Disneyland, then heck ya I’m on board.

Its also occurring to me that I’m not sure how much we’ll really be learning here today, but hey, maybe you’ll be able to learn some new coping mechanisms to navigate the world without Disneyland. Also, I feel pretty hopeful that 2021 will bring Disneyland back to us. Lets all hope that thats the case.

Sooo… If you want to learn how to help the sting thats burning within your heart because Disneyland has been closed forever…I mean, since March 2020, keep on reading. Here are my go-to ways to help my heart when I’m missing my happy place particularly badly.

HOW TO COPE WITH DISNEYLAND STILL BEING CLOSED

  • Look at your Disney pictures. The ones your parents took of you in front of the castle when you were 1 to the ones you took on your latest visit. Look at all of them and feel all the emotions. Cry, laugh, reminisce, then hang your head and allow yourself to feel some sorrow for you are not in a Disney Park. Its ok to admit you’re sad without it. Then end that thought on thinking back to some of your favorite Disneyland memories.
  • YouTube all the Disney things. Our personal favorite things to YouTube are: Fantasmic , most Disney parades but I’m particularly fond of the Paint the Night and Soundsational currently. Watch peoples Vlogs from the park.
  • Wear your Disney apparel. It doesn’t matter if its a shirt with Mickey Mouse on it, socks with the castle, sweat pants with DISNEYLAND going down the leg or maybe its even your favorite pair of ears – wear them. Also encourage your family to do the same. Dress your baby in all his/her Disney clothes. Inform your spouse how much you’d love if they followed suit. Tell your friends to join in. Then, feel a little more magical in your outfit.
  • Hang up another Disney picture somewhere in your house/room. You know, if there is room. Because if you can’t be there its only natural to have every nook and cranny in your home remind you of the place you longed to be. Then stare at those pictures and text your spouse about when your next trip will be – because you aren’t there and you need to be, pronto.
  • Change your wallpaper on your phone to a Disney Park picture. Or, if you’re like us, switch from one Disney Park picture to another. That way each time you look at your phone you will be greeted by some Disney magic.
  • Listen to all the Disney Park music 24/7. It is crucial to your happiness/misery that you never have a moment without the magical melody of a Disney tune playing in your ear. Close your eyes and imagine you’re there. Think of your beautiful memories from The Happiest Place on Earth. Feel the joy swell in your heart. Smell the smells. Then open your eyes. Shoot, you aren’t there. But instead of getting too sad – plan your next trip – whenever that will be. Just start planning.
  • Get online and start surfing shopdisney.com, I mean, you probably need some new Disney stuff in your life. Aaaaaand, technically Disney merch is cheaper than tickets to Disney, so, you’re basically saving money on this one. You’re welcome.
  • Cry. Because lets me honest. Its kind of impossible to cope with not being in Disney and sometimes crying can solve a problem or two — and it feels good. I cry about Disney all the time, just ask my kids.

Ted Bundy #letsLEARNfriday

My true-crime-lovin’ self felt my heart pitter patter when I say the name, Ted Bundy, come in on Instagram as an entry for what I should do for #letsLEARNfriday sometime. Ted Bundy terrifies and fascinates me all at the same time, and I am so excited to do a little bit of a deep dive on him. Granted, this will certainly be a glossed-over tale about him, but regardless, I’m looking forward to this research. I’ve listened to several podcasts about him over the years and have watched a documentary or two, but I know I still have much to learn. Lets see how I do. I hope you learned something new along the way!

Also, I feel like this goes without saying, but I feel this post should have a trigger warning. We will talk about a serial rapist and murderer. BUT I will not go into any details of the rapes or murders. Can’t do that here, sorry. So if thats not your cup of tea, I GET IT. Come back next week – I promise I won’t pick something murdery.

Ted Bundy

Theodore Robert Bundy was born on November 24, 1946 in Burlington, Vermont. He was an illegitimate child to his mother, Eleanor Louise Cowell. In 1951, Eleanor married Johnnie Bundy. Its reported that Ted didn’t ever have much of a relationship with him, but did take his last name. Ted’s mother was ashamed of him (because she wasn’t married when she had him) and he ended up being raised as the adopted son of his grandparents, and for a time, was told and believed his mother was his sister. Ted was always a little macabre. Its reported that when he was three, he had a fascination of knives start to develop. Then, when he was a teen, he peered in peoples windows (ew) and frequently stole things. Later, Ted Bundy graduated from University of Washington with his degree in psychology and was then accepted to go to law school in Utah.

So here is something insane. Ted Bundy admitted to killing 36 women, but experts now think his total was closer to 100, possibly even more. Uhhhhh. That is freaky! Ultimately, his grand total will never be known, but the speculation is crazy.

Its not completely known when Bundy began his killing spree, but it sounds like the overall estimate is that he began in 1974. Women in the Seattle area and the nearby Oregon area began going missing and it was reported that they were last seen with a handsome man named, Ted.

Bundy’s first known attack was in January 1974 when he assaulted and beat Karen Sparks at the University of Washington in her apartment. She survived, thankfully, but suffered terrible brain damage and doesn’t remember anything from this attack. I mean, obviously her whole situation is so sad, but maybe in a way its a tiny silver lining to not remember what happened? I don’t know, I can’t decide how I feel about that. Any way you spin it, its just sad. On February 1, 1974, he committed his first documented murder. Between January and July, Bundy was believed to have killed at least eight women in Seattle. These victims were Lynda Healy, Donna Gail Manson, Susan Elaine Rancourt, Brenda Carol Ball, Georgeann Hawkins, Denise Naslund and Roberta Kathleen Parks (from Oregon). (at this time, it was noted that most of his victims had long, dark hair that was parted down the middle).

In the Fall of 1974, Bundy moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to attend Law School. Between October and November (thats just two months!!) he murdered Nancy Wilcox, Melissa Smith, Laura Aime and Debi Kent.

He had a routine to his awful acts. He often times took women’s kindness and allowed it to backfire on them. Many times he would pretend to be injured and would ask these women for help getting to his car, etc, and these wonderful ladies were kind and just wanted to help this handsome, hurt man and he took advantage of them. Its awful. He also had a pattern to his murders in that he would typically rape them first, then beat them to death. Ugh.

On November 8, 1974, Ted Bundy attempted to kidnap a woman named Carol DaRonch. DaRonch was out shopping when a man approached her, claiming to be a police officer who said someone attempted to steal her car and he wanted to take her outside to file a police report. He told her he’d take her to the police station where they were ‘holding the suspect.’ But on their way, he pulled over and handcuffed her. He attempted to beat her, but miraculously she escaped and immediately reported it to police. The real police. This act ultimately led to his first arrest in August of 1975.

In the next few months, he murdered Caryn Eileen Campbell, Julie Ann Cunningham, Denise Lynn Oliverson, Lynette Dawn Culver and Susan Curtis.

Around this time, Bundy’s longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, called police and told them to look into her boyfriend because she was growing suspicious of him (can you imagine?). In August of 1975, Bundy was pulled over while driving in Salt Lake and was found with a crowbar, ice pick, face mask, rope, handcuffs and more. He was then arrested – but I guess not because of all the creepy stuff he had in his car, but because he fit the description of Carol DaRonch’s kidnapper. (more incriminating evidence was found in his apartment after they obtained a search warrant for it during this time). On March 1, 1976, he was convicted of indeed, kidnapping DaRonch and was sentenced to 1-15 years in jail.

July 7, 1977 was the first time that Ted Bundy escaped from prison by jumping out of the windows during a hearting and was missing for 6-8 days (different sources give different numbers). Once found, he went straight to trial. Then on December 30, 1977, he escaped a second time. The stories are kind of all over the place on the internet about this, but somehow, there was a hole in the ceiling – maybe one from a light fixture? maybe one he made himself? and Bundy, having lost 30 pounds was able to shimmy through it and crawl through the ceiling and essentially walk right out of jail. Its reported that his disappearance wasn’t even noticed for at least 15 hours, which gave him plenty of time to high-tail it out of there.

Where did he end up next? Tallahassee, Florida. And on January 15, 1978, he attacked four women from the Chi Omega sorority house, killing two of them, Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy. That same night, he reportedly attacked another woman in her home.

On February 9, 1978, Bundy attacked and murdered 12-year old Kimberly Leach near her school. Kimberly broke his pattern of his usual victims because she was his only known underage victim. This one really makes me sad. Twelve years old… Thankfully, a week after her senseless murder, he was pulled over for driving with a stolen license.

In June of 1979 his trial began for the murders of Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy (the sorority girls). He acted as his own attorney (ok?) but apparently sucked at that because he was found GUILTY and sentenced to death by the electric chair. In January of 1980, he then stood trial for the murder of little Kimberly Leach where he was once again found GUILTY and sentenced to death — thats 3 death sentences now.

In Florida State Prison on January 24, 1989, Ted Bundy was executed via electric chair. His last words were reportedly, “I’d like you to give my love to family and friends.”

Other Facts:

-While on trial for Kimberly Leach’s murder in 1980, Ted Bundy married Carole Boone. In 1981 she gave birth to their daughter. They divorced in 1986.

-The electric chair he was executed in was nicknamed, “Old Sparky.”

-Supposedly his victims resembled an ex-girlfriend of his

-He would revisit the corpses and had many photographs of his victims bodies

-There are many documentaries about Bundy

Well. There you have it. A quick look at Ted Bundy, convicted serial rapist and murderer. I am aware I could have got more into his crimes, his victims, and details like those, but in an attempt to keep this post as G-Rated as possible, I opted to go the cleaner route.

So what do you think? How’d I do? What should we learn about next?

Great White Sharks #letsLEARNfriday

I’m kind of cracking up that the first thing we are going to do a deep dive on is great white sharks, but guys, four people requested it! I had no idea that great whites were such an interesting topic! But I get it. They are fascinating. So lets do this, shall we? Lets learn about these big ol’ sharks!

GREAT WHITE SHARKS

picture from national geographic.com

Description and Features

Great White Sharks, or their scientific name, Carcharodon Carcharis (doesn’t that sound like a dinosaur name?), are large, ahem, huge carnivorous fish. They are the apex predator of the ocean. They tend to grow to be about 15 to 20+ feet long and can weigh anywhere around two and a half tons. They’re shaped similarly to a torpedo and have a gray upper body that can easily help them blend in with the bottom of the ocean floor, and a white under belly, which is where they get their name from. They have incredibly powerful tails that can launch them through the water at speeds around 15mph. Torpedo, indeed. Great White Sharks can have up to 300 sharp, triangular-shaped teeth in several rows inside of their powerful jaws. They also have impeccable senses of smell, which no doubt helps them when finding their next meal. Sharks are so wired for hunting that they even have a ‘sixth sense,’ if you will. They are able to sense electrical currents in the water that come off of other living things. With an advantage like that, no wonder they’re the apex. Oh, and you know those little fish that you see swimming right beside sharks? I learned that those little guys are called, Pilot Fish and they eat parasites off of larger fish, as well as catching scraps that they don’t eat. They also feel protected beside these large predators, because the fish that would typically feast on them won’t come near a shark.

Diet

Great Whites are the largest predatory fish in the ocean, and there is very little that they won’t feed on. They have been known to feed on other sharks, crustaceans, sea birds, mollusks and various fish. Larger Great White Sharks have also been known to prey on sea lions, seals, small whales, dolphins and deceased larger whales.

Population

These sharks are commonly found in cool, coastal waters. It sounds like there isn’t really an estimate on the exact population of these giant creatures, however scientists say that their numbers and tragically dropping. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature say they are classified as, ‘vulnerable,’ which is just one short step away from endangered. Two of the biggest dangers to a sharks life are overfishing and sharks getting caught in fish nets. This makes me so sad! Even if these are big, scary predators, it breaks my heart to learn of a species slowly getting smaller and small in numbers.

Not-So-Family-Oriented

A mother shark will typically have two baby sharks at a time called, Pups. Pups commonly weigh around 50 to 60 pounds at birth. Mama shark has zero maternal instinct though. The second those babies pop into the ocean, they are on their own. In some cases, the mother shark will even try to eat her own pups. Immediately after birth, these baby sharks will swim off into the ocean, completely taking care of themselves.

Shark Attacks

Lastly, and something I think everyone thinks about when sharks are discussed is the subject of shark attacks. National Geographic says, “Of the 100-plus annual shark attacks worldwide, a third to a half are attributed to great white sharks.” Thankfully, however, the majority of these attacks are not fatal. Great Whites are known to “sample-bite” before really attacking, and typically when they ‘sample’ a human, they let them go. I mean, being sampled by a shark still sounds like something thats definitely on my top 5 list of fears, but I guess its a little more reassuring to know that humans aren’t something sharks are craving, you know? When there are fatal attacks, they’re usually because of what you could call, mistaken identity. A swimmer in the ocean can easily look like a tasty seal to a shark. Its also important to remember that when you enter the ocean, you are entering the sharks home. They have even more of a right to be there than you do. It is important to be aware and informed when you enter any area of ocean.

But what can you do if you if a shark approaches you in the water? Some steps you can take to help your chances out are to maintain eye-contact, don’t panic and make sudden or splashy movements, do not play dead, remember you can punch the nose – but remember its mouth is right under that – maybe jab their gills instead, slowly back away. But like…lets just really hope none of us find ourselves in this predicament. CAN YOU IMAGINE?! *shudders*

Great White Shark Fun Facts:

-A Great White can smell a single drop of blood in 25 gallons of water – they could also detect a colony of seals around 2 miles away

-The sharks scientific name essentially means, “ragged-toothed”

-Great White Sharks (and all true sharks) have no real bones

-They usually attack their prey coming at them from below

-Some sharks become very docile and even in a trance-like state when flipped upside down (something researches use to their advantage)
